Bio Data of Dr. Nagaraj N. Rao

Dr. Nagaraj N. Rao obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Science
with Distinction and a Gold Medal in Chemistry from the University
of Bombay. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Science (Chemical
Technology, Technology of Pharmaceuticals and Fine Chemicals) with
First Class from the University Department of Chemical Technology,
Bombay. After completing an industry-sponsored Certificate Course in
Packaging at the Indian Institute of Packaging, Bombay, he joined
M/s Colgate-Palmolive (I) Limited, Bombay as a Trainee Chemist in
their R&D and Analytical Laboratory. During his two-year stay
with Colgate, he developed a new formula for a skin cream, which
turned out to be very successful. He also contributed to process
improvement in other Colgate products.
He immatriculated at the
University of Bonn in the Federal Republic of Germany for higher
studies. Besides completing advanced courses in biochemical
engineering, organic chemistry and analytical chemistry at Bonn, he
obtained the degree of Dr. rer. nat. from the Faculty of Chemistry
and Pharmacy of the University of Tuebingen with magna cum laude,
under the guidance of Prof. Dr. H.J. Roth. He was a Teaching
Assistant at the pharmacy institutes at Bonn and Tuebingen
Universities. He subsequently worked as a post-doctoral scientist at
the Institute of Biotechnology of the Research Center Juelich, in
Prof. Dr. C. Wandrey's laboratory. He was also a member of the
Editorial Board for the German-language version of the European
Pharmacopoea from 1984-1986 and a translator for Ullmann’s
Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. Dr. Rao has been involved in
Indo-German cooperation in biotechnology since two
decades.
Dr. Rao established the manufacturing activities
at RRR after his return to India. From 1993 to 2008, he
was a visiting scientist at the Research Center Juelich,
Germany and a visiting faculty in the Institute of Chemical
Technology, Mumbai. He was a UDCT Golder Jubilee Visiting
Fellow in 2000. He received the N. M. Sampat Award of
the Electrochemical Society of India, Bengaluru for the
year 2010 in the field of Metal Finishing. Dr. Rao was
awarded a distinguished visiting professorship in biotechnology
at the PSG College of Technology Coimbatore in 2011.
Dr. Rao is a member of the German Electroplaters'
Society (DGO) since several years. He was a member of
the Governing Council of the Metal Finishers' Association
of India from 1998 to 2006. He took over the Chief Editorship
of “Transactions of the MFAI” and was the
Chief Editor of Indian Surface Finishing, the quarterly
technical publication of the MFAI, from 2004 to 2007.Dr.
Rao writes since several years a monthly “Report
from India” in the technical journal “Galvanotechnik”.
Dr. Rao is Associate Editor of "Indian Drugs",
the monthly scientific publication of the Indian Drug
Manufacturers Association IDMA. Dr. Rao is on the Advisory
Committee for the M. Tech. Course in Bioprocess Technology
of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. Dr. Rao
is also an Advisor to reputed pharmaceutical companies.
His fields of interest include the synthesis of fine and
speciality chemicals using organic chemistry, chemical
engineering and biotechnology including electrochemistry,
surface finishing, and the development of formulations
for various applications
